How to use your EPF in a medical emergency

If you or a family member needs treatment and you have a PF account, you can take a partial withdrawal for illness. It is your own money, there is no interest to pay, and for most people the claim is online. Try this before you sell gold or borrow.

Check these first, they may mean you don't need to withdraw at all: health insurance from your employer or your own policy (ask the hospital's insurance desk about cashless treatment), ESIC if your employer covers you, and Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY if your family is eligible or the patient is 70 or older (call 14555).

Who can claim

  • Any EPF member, for treatment of themselves, their spouse, children or dependent parents.
  • Hospitalisation, surgery, and treatment of serious illnesses such as cancer, TB, paralysis, kidney or heart disease are all covered purposes.
  • Your UAN must be activated, with Aadhaar linked and verified and your bank account verified in KYC. If any of these is missing, do it today; it is the most common reason claims get stuck.

How much you can withdraw

EPFO simplified its partial withdrawal rules in 2025, and the limits have changed more than once. You don't need to work it out yourself: when you choose the purpose in the online claim form, the portal shows the maximum eligible amount for your account. You can ask for any amount up to that.

Your final retirement balance is reduced by what you take, and the money no longer earns EPF interest. Take what the treatment needs, not more.

Step by step: claim online

  1. Log in to the EPFO member portalGo to unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in and log in with your UAN, password and captcha. On your phone you can use the UMANG app and choose EPFO → Raise Claim.
  2. Check your KYCUnder Manage → KYC, confirm that Aadhaar, PAN and your bank account show as verified. Under View → Service History, confirm your current employer's date of joining is recorded.
  3. Start the claimGo to Online Services → Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D). Enter the last four digits of your bank account to verify it.
  4. Choose PF advance (Form 31)Select "I want to apply for PF Advance (Form 31)", then choose the purpose for illness or medical treatment. The portal shows your eligible amount.
  5. Enter the amount and addressEnter the amount you need, your address, and upload a scanned cheque or passbook page if asked.
  6. Submit with the Aadhaar OTPAn OTP goes to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. Enter it to submit. Note the claim reference number.
  7. Track the claimOnline Services → Track Claim Status. Many illness claims are auto-settled and the money reaches your bank account in about three to five working days. Claims needing manual checks can take longer.

Beware of "PF agents". You never need to pay anyone to file an EPF claim, and no genuine EPFO staff will ask for your password or OTP. If someone offers to "fast-track" your claim for a fee, it is a scam.

If the hospital needs money today

A PF claim usually takes a few days. For the gap:

  • Ask the hospital's billing desk to start treatment on a deposit and show them your submitted claim reference. Many will accept a partial payment.
  • Ask your employer for a salary advance against the pending PF claim.
  • If you have gold, a bank gold loan for a few weeks costs very little, and you repay it when the PF money arrives. See gold loan vs personal loan.
  • Avoid loan apps and moneylenders, even for a week. A short loan at "just 1% a day" costs more than the whole gold loan.

After the emergency

EPF is retirement money. Using it once for a real emergency is sensible; needing it repeatedly means your family needs a separate emergency fund and health insurance. Once things settle, start there.

Questions people ask

Do I need a doctor's certificate for an EPF medical withdrawal?

For an online claim, EPFO accepts a self-declaration for illness claims in most cases. Keep the hospital estimate and bills anyway; EPFO can ask for them, and your employer may need them for its own records.

Is the withdrawal taxable?

A partial withdrawal (advance) from EPF for illness is not taxed as income. Tax questions arise mainly on final settlement before five years of service, which is different from a partial withdrawal.

My claim was rejected. What now?

The rejection reason appears in the claim status. The usual causes are a bank account not verified in KYC, a name or date of birth mismatch with Aadhaar, or a missing date of joining. Fix the issue in the member portal and file again. Complaints go to epfigms.gov.in or the EPFO helpline 14470.

I don't have EPF. What are my options?

Check whether you are covered by ESIC (free treatment at ESI hospitals) or eligible for Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY (up to ₹5 lakh hospital cover). Ask the hospital for an instalment plan. If you have gold, a bank gold loan is far cheaper than any app or moneylender.
