Emergency fund calculator: how much your family needs, and how to get there

An emergency fund is the wall between a bad month and a loan app. This page gives you your number, a realistic timeline, and the few rules that make the fund actually work.

Your number

—

"Basic expenses" means what you would still have to pay if income stopped: rent, food, school fees, medicines, transport, EMIs, insurance premiums. Leave out eating out, shopping and festivals; you would cut those first.

Three months or six?

Three months is the floor. Go to six if any of these is true: you are the only earner, your income is irregular (business, freelance, daily wage, commission), your job is in an industry that lays people off, or someone at home has an ongoing medical condition. If all of them are true, aim for nine and stop feeling guilty about it.

Where to keep it

The fund has one job: to be there, in full, within a day, on the worst day of the year. That rules out most things people call savings.

OptionVerdictWhy
Separate savings account (not your salary account)Yes, for the first 1 to 2 monthsInstant access, and a separate account keeps it out of sight so it isn't spent
Bank recurring deposit / sweep-in FDYesSlightly better interest; can be broken in a day with a small penalty
Liquid or overnight mutual fundYes, for the remaining monthsReturns close to FD, money in your account within a working day, no lock-in
GoldNoSelling in a hurry loses 10 to 20%. Gold is long-term wealth, not cash
Shares or equity fundsNoThe market may be down 30% on the day you need the money
Lent to a relativeNoYou cannot demand it back on the day the hospital asks
Cash at homeSmall amount onlyUseful for one or two days of a bank outage; unsafe and earns nothing beyond that

How to start when there is nothing left at month end

  1. Open a second bank account this weekAny bank, zero-balance is fine. Do not link it to UPI apps. Its only job is to hold the fund.
  2. Set an auto-transfer on salary day₹500 if that is all you can spare. The amount matters less than the automation: money you never see, you never spend. Raise it every time your income rises.
  3. Send windfalls there firstBonus, Diwali gift, tax refund, money from selling an old phone: half of it goes to the fund before it reaches your main account.
  4. Reach one month, then celebrateOne month of expenses is the point at which a small emergency stops reaching your gold or your phone. Most families never get here; you just did.
  5. Then insureOnce you have one to two months saved, buy a family health insurance policy and, if people depend on your income, a term life plan. A ₹5 lakh hospital bill is the commonest reason gold gets sold; ₹15,000 a year of premium prevents it.
  6. Keep going to three, then sixAfter that, new savings can go to long-term places: PPF, index funds, and yes, gold.

Rules for using it

  • What counts: job loss, hospital, urgent house or vehicle repair, a family member's crisis.
  • What doesn't: a wedding you knew about, a festival, a sale, a friend's business idea.
  • Using it is not failure. It is the plan working. Refill it before any other saving resumes.
  • Review it once a year. Expenses rise; the fund should too.

Wondering how bad the alternative is? Put the last loan message you received into the real-cost calculator. And if you already own gold, see why a gold loan beats selling while the fund is still growing.
