An emergency fund when income comes by the day

For daily-wage workers, drivers, vendors, domestic workers, farm labourers and small shopkeepers. When income changes every day, the usual "save 20% of salary" advice doesn't fit. This does.

The rule: save on good days, not every day

If you earn ₹800 one day and nothing the next, a fixed monthly target just makes you feel you failed. Instead, pick a small daily amount you save only on days you work, and a bigger amount on unusually good days: a festival rush, a big job, overtime. The fund grows fast in good weeks and rests in bad ones.

How fast can you build one month of cover?

Where to keep it

Cash at home gets spent, borrowed, or lost. Keep only a day or two of money at home and move the rest where it is safe but still reachable.

Post Office Recurring DepositRegular saversStarts from ₹100 a month. Good if you can commit a fixed amount; the post office is close to most villages.

Keep this account separate from the one you use for UPI, if you can. Money you don't see on your phone is money you don't spend.

Cheap protection that stops the biggest shocks

The commonest reason poor families sell gold or borrow from moneylenders is a hospital bill or the death of an earner. These government schemes cost very little, and you can join through your bank:

  • Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY): ₹20 a year for ₹2 lakh accident insurance, for ages 18 to 70.
  • Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY): ₹436 a year for ₹2 lakh life insurance, for ages 18 to 50.
  • Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY): up to ₹5 lakh a year per family for hospital treatment at empanelled hospitals, free for eligible families and everyone aged 70+. Check eligibility on 14555.
  • ESIC: if you work in a factory or establishment covered by ESIC (usually for wages up to ₹21,000 a month), you and your family get treatment at ESI hospitals. Ask your employer for your ESIC number.
  • e-Shram card: a free registration for unorganised workers at eshram.gov.in or a Common Service Centre, which helps you access welfare schemes.

Ask at your bank branch to enrol in PMSBY and PMJJBY with auto-debit. Together they cost ₹456 a year, less than ₹40 a month.

Five habits that make it work

  1. Save first, then spendPut the day's saving aside when you are paid, before tea, before anything else.
  2. Deposit on a fixed dayEvery Sunday or every market day. A routine beats willpower.
  3. Half of every windfallFestival bonus, a big contract, a harvest payment: half goes to the fund first.
  4. Tell the family what the fund is forIllness, a lost job, an urgent repair. Not a wedding, festival or new phone.
  5. If you use it, refill itUsing the fund is the plan working. Start refilling the next working day.

When money runs out anyway: a moneylender charging "₹10 per ₹100 per month" is 120% a year, and a loan app is often worse. A gold loan from a bank is usually 9 to 12% a year. See gold loan vs selling gold, and never pay anyone a fee upfront to "approve" a loan.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to keep savings in a Jan Dhan account?

Yes. It is a normal bank savings account with zero minimum balance, and deposits in any bank are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per bank. Keep your UPI PIN and ATM PIN secret and never share OTPs.

What about chit funds or committees?

Registered chit funds are legal, but money comes back only on your turn or at a discount if you bid early, so they are not an emergency fund. Unregistered committees and 'double your money' schemes often disappear with everyone's savings.

Who can get Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY)?

Families identified as eligible in the government's lists (mostly lower-income and some occupational groups), and every person aged 70 or older regardless of income. Check at beneficiary.nha.gov.in, call 14555, or ask at a Common Service Centre or empanelled hospital.

I can only save ₹10 a day. Is that worth it?

Yes. ₹10 a day for 25 working days is ₹250 a month, ₹3,000 a year. That is a doctor's visit and medicines without borrowing. The habit matters more than the amount; raise it when you can.
