Save Your Gold · अपना सोना बचाओ

Gold is not your emergency fund.

सोना बचाने के लिए है, बेचने के लिए नहीं।

Most Indian families own gold and call it an investment. Then a job goes or a hospital bill lands, and the gold is sold in a week at whatever price the jeweller offers. When the gold runs out, the phone fills with "instant loan approved" messages. This site shows how that cycle works and the one habit that breaks it.

Put those together: Indians hold enormous wealth in gold, sell it only when forced, and the moment they are forced, thousands of predatory apps are waiting. The problem is not that people don't save. It is that they save in a form they can only use by losing money.

Why selling gold in a hurry keeps you poor

Gold works as wealth only if you never have to touch it. The moment you sell under pressure, you lose three times.

You lose the making chargesJewellery costs 8 to 25% more than the metal. The jeweller buys back only the metal, so that premium vanishes the day you sell.
You sell at the worst priceA buyer who knows you need cash today offers less. Deductions for purity, wastage and a lower buy-back rate are routine.
You buy back higherFamilies rebuy the same gold years later at a higher price, paying making charges all over again.

Most people have never been told a gold loan exists. Banks and registered NBFCs lend against gold at roughly 9 to 14% a year, and you get the same gold back when you repay. A loan app charging 1% a day is over 365% a year. If you must use gold in an emergency, pledge it, don't sell it. See the full comparison with a calculator.

The worst end of the cycle is real. Every year newspapers carry stories of people in debt being approached to sell a kidney. Selling an organ is illegal in India, dangerous, and the middlemen keep most of the money. Nobody starts there; they arrive one "small" loan at a time.

The message you get every day

VM-LOANXX
Congratulations! You are pre-approved for ₹50,000. No documents, no CIBIL, money in 5 minutes. Click: bit.ly/xxxx

Read it again. No documents and no credit check means the lender expects many borrowers to default, and prices the loan so the people who pay cover the people who don't. The money in your account is real. The cost hides in the "processing fee" cut before the money arrives, and in a rate quoted per week or per day so it sounds small.

What does that loan really cost?

—

For comparison: a bank personal loan is usually 10 to 18% a year. A credit card, which people call expensive, is 36 to 42% a year. Many loan apps work out to several hundred percent a year once the fee and the short tenure are counted.

The habit that breaks the cycle: an emergency fund

Cash you can reach in a day, kept only for job loss, illness or urgent repairs. It sits between "Earn" and "Emergency" in the cycle, so an emergency never reaches your gold or a loan app.

Target: three to six months of your family's basic expenses. Not your salary, your expenses: rent, food, school fees, medicines, travel, EMIs. Keep it in a savings account, a bank recurring deposit, or a liquid mutual fund. Not in gold, not in shares, not lent to a relative.

How exposed is your family? A one-minute check

Six honest answers. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere.

1. If your income stopped today, how long could your family pay its bills from cash savings?

2. Does your family have health insurance that would cover a ₹3 lakh hospital bill?

3. Where is most of your family's savings?

4. Does money leave your account for savings automatically on salary day?

5. In the last year, has anyone in the family borrowed from an app, a moneylender or a chit fund to cover an expense?

6. Does the main earner have term life insurance?

When money is short, use this order

Each step is cheaper than the one below it. Skipping to the bottom is exactly what the loan message wants you to do.

  1. Emergency fundThis is what it is for. Spending it is not failure; it is the plan working.
  2. Cut and delayPause subscriptions, negotiate a later rent date, ask the school or hospital for instalments. Most agree if you ask before the due date, not after.
  3. Employer or PF advanceMany employers give salary advances. EPF allows partial withdrawal for illness, education, marriage and housing.
  4. Gold loan or FD loan from a bankKeeps your asset. Interest is a fraction of a loan app. Ask for the full annual rate in writing.
  5. Family or community, with a written noteWrite the amount and the date you will repay. It protects the relationship as much as the money.
  6. Bank or registered NBFC loanSlower, needs documents, but regulated: there is a complaint process and rules on recovery.
  7. Never: an unregistered loan app or a local moneylenderNo regulator, no limit on interest, and recovery works by shame: calls to your contacts, edited photos, threats.

Spot an illegal loan app before you install it

Tick everything that is true about the app. Two ticks is already a reason to walk away.

Tick the boxes to get a verdict.

Since July 2025 the RBI keeps a public directory of every Digital Lending App run by a regulated bank or NBFC, so you can check a name before you install. RBI's digital lending rules also require the full cost to be shown in a Key Fact Statement before you borrow, the money to come from a regulated entity's own account, and forbid blanket access to your phone. An app that breaks these is not a lender; it is a collections business.

If you are already trapped

You are not the criminal. Threats, calls to your contacts and morphed photos are crimes committed against you.

Step-by-step: what to do if a loan app is harassing you

Where safe money goes

Different jobs need different places. The mistake is putting emergency money where it cannot be reached, or long-term money where it earns nothing.

JobPut it inWhy
Emergency fund (3 to 6 months)Savings account, bank RD, liquid fundReachable within a day, no loss on withdrawal
Goal in 1 to 5 years (school fees, wedding)Bank FD, RD, Post Office schemesFixed, guaranteed, date-matched
Long term (15+ years)PPF, EPF, index mutual fund SIP, and then goldGrowth over time; gold as a share, not the whole plan
ProtectionHealth insurance, term life insuranceA ₹5 lakh hospital bill is the commonest reason gold gets sold. Insurance is cheaper than the bill.

Notice where gold sits: last, after protection and after an emergency fund. Gold is a fine store of wealth for a family that will never be forced to sell it. Build that family first.

Questions people ask

Is it better to sell gold or take a gold loan in an emergency?

Almost always a gold loan. Selling loses the making charges you paid and typically 5 to 10% in buy-back deductions, and you must rebuy later at a higher price. A bank gold loan at roughly 9 to 12% a year returns the same gold to you when you repay. The exception is if you are certain you can never repay; then selling to a reputable buyer beats a loan that ends in auction.

How much emergency fund should an Indian family keep?

Three to six months of basic monthly expenses: rent, food, school fees, medicines, EMIs. Single-income families and people with irregular income should aim for six. Keep it in a savings account, recurring deposit or liquid fund where you can withdraw within a day.

How do I check if a loan app is legal in India?

Look up the app in the RBI's Digital Lending Apps directory on rbi.org.in and confirm the name of the regulated bank or NBFC behind it. A legal app must show a Key Fact Statement with the annual percentage rate before you borrow, cannot deduct hidden fees before disbursal, and cannot demand access to your contacts or photos.

What should I do if a loan app is harassing me or calling my contacts?

Keep screenshots, tell your close contacts before the app does, uninstall the app and revoke its permissions, then report to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in and to RBI's Sachet portal. Do not take a second loan to pay the first. Full steps here.

Isn't gold a good investment? Why are you against it?

This site is not against gold. Gold has protected Indian families' wealth for generations, and prices have risen strongly. The problem is using gold as the only savings, so that every emergency forces a sale at a loss. Build an emergency fund and insurance first; then gold becomes what it should be, wealth you never have to touch.

Is selling a kidney legal in India?

No. Buying or selling human organs is a criminal offence under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act. The surgery is done in secret, aftercare is nil, and the promised amount is rarely paid in full. Report anyone offering money for an organ to the police or 1930; the person offering is the one breaking the law.

Who made this

Aniket Sanduja is a finance student who spends his days studying how money and markets work, and noticed that almost none of it reaches the people who need it most: the family selling a bangle at a jeweller's counter, the auto driver replying to a loan SMS. Save Your Gold is his attempt to fix that in plain language, with no products to sell.

Everything here is general education, not personal financial advice. Rates are typical ranges; confirm with your bank. If you spot an error, write in.

One thing I will do this month

Write it down. Small and specific beats big and vague: "₹500 auto-debit into a new account on the 1st" works; "save more" does not.
