Gold loan vs personal loan: which should you take?

Short answer: if you own gold and can repay within a year, a bank gold loan is usually cheaper and faster. A personal loan makes sense when you have no gold, a good credit score and need a longer, fixed EMI.

What it costs, in rupees

Say you need ₹1,00,000 for 12 months and repay by EMI. Total interest at typical rates:

OptionRate (a year)Monthly EMITotal interest
Bank gold loan10%₹8,792₹5,499
Bank personal loan, good score12%₹8,885₹6,619
Personal loan, average score18%₹9,168₹10,016
Credit card EMI / revolving40%₹10,247₹22,966

Before processing fees, which are typically 0.5 to 2% on either kind of loan and often higher on personal loans. Try your own numbers in the gold loan interest calculator.

The gap looks small between a gold loan and a good-score personal loan. It grows quickly when your score is average, and a gold loan has one more advantage: you can repay early, usually without a charge, so if the emergency passes in four months you pay only four months' interest.

Choose a gold loan when

  • You need money today and have gold at home.
  • Your credit score is low, or you have no salary slip (self-employed, daily wage, homemaker).
  • You expect to repay within 6 to 12 months, for example after a bonus, harvest or insurance claim.
  • You want to repay early without penalty.

Choose a personal loan when

  • You have no gold, or the gold carries meaning you won't risk.
  • Your credit score is good and your bank offers you a rate close to a gold loan.
  • You need a fixed EMI over 2 to 5 years that fits your salary.

Neither option is a loan app. An app charging "just 1% a day" is 365% a year, more than 30 times a bank gold loan. Put any app offer into the real-cost calculator before you accept.

Before you sign either loan

  • Ask for the annual percentage rate (APR), which includes fees, in writing.
  • Borrow from a bank or an RBI-registered NBFC only. Check the name on rbi.org.in.
  • For a gold loan, watch the weighing and sealing, and get a receipt listing every item, its weight and purity.
  • Set up an auto-debit for the interest or EMI on day one. Missed gold loan interest adds up, and repeated default ends in auction.

And once this emergency is behind you, build an emergency fund so the next one doesn't need a loan at all.

Questions people ask

Can I get a gold loan with a low CIBIL score?

Usually yes. Because the gold secures the loan, lenders care far less about your credit score than for a personal loan. You still need KYC documents, and repaying on time will improve your score.

How fast can I get a gold loan?

Often the same day, sometimes within an hour at a branch, once the gold is tested and your KYC is done. Personal loans for existing bank customers can also be quick; for new customers they can take several days.

What is the risk of a gold loan?

If you stop paying, the lender can auction your gold after notices and a grace period. With a personal loan you risk your credit score and legal action, but no specific possession. Only pledge gold you are confident you can bring home.

Is an NBFC gold loan better than a bank gold loan?

Banks are generally cheaper. NBFCs are often faster, open longer hours and accept more types of jewellery. Compare the full annual rate and all fees before you choose.
